Can my tax check be taken if my wife owes overpayment for disability?

My stepson use to get a disability check. When my wife and i got married she did not immediately tell them we were married and received a few more checks. She reported that she had gotten married and he was no longer eligible for disability. She has a repayment plan setup. I had nothing to do with the social security, and its only in her/my stepsons name. Will they take my tax return since we are married? Can i file separately to avoid this?
